SUMMARY

This book is a children's biography about Abraham Lincoln.  This book starts out with Abe talking about who he is and what he liked to do as a kid.  He says that most kids spend their time working for their parents, but he likes to read and write.  He wrote his first essay when he was only ten years old!  He would walk even six miles to get a new book.  It didn't take long for Abe to make it through all the books in his neighborhood... his favorite one was about George Washington, though.

He moved when he was 22 years old, and he had to stand up for himself.  When he was challenged, he struggled to stand up for himself... but he promised that he would only win fair and square.  This ambition to do what was right, stayed with Abraham Lincoln when he became president.  He lost four elections before he finally took office, and he was finally able to stand up for the slaves who didn't have a voice of their own.

MY OPINION & RECOMMENDATIONS

This book is so cute!  I like how there are speech bubbles for Abraham Lincoln and the other characters because it gives the story more emotion.  This story has great illustrations that would be very engaging for middle or younger elementary students.

I highly recommend this book for really any age in elementary school!  I think it would be a good introductory story to Abraham Lincoln for younger students.  And older students could use this story to compare and contrast things they already know about Abe, and things they don't think are true.

It's a very cool story because not only does it teach kids about Abe Lincoln, but it also has good moral lessons at the end of the book.

PROFESSIONAL REVIEW

We can all be heroes. That’s the inspiring message of this lively, collectible picture book biography series from New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer. Kids always search for heroes, so we might as well have a say in it, Brad Meltzer realized, and so he envisioned this friendly, fun approach to biography for his own kids, and for yours. Each book tells the story of one of America’s icons in an entertaining, conversational way that works well for the youngest nonfiction readers, those who aren’t quite ready for the Who Was series. Each book focuses on a particular character trait that made that role model heroic. For example, Abraham Lincoln always spoke up about fairness, and thus he led the country to abolish slavery. This book follows him from childhood to the presidency, including the Civil War and his legendary Gettysburg Address. This engaging series is the perfect way to bring American history to life for young children, and to inspire them to strive and dream.
